The Perfect White Chocolate Buttercream Frosting

white chocolate buttercream

White chocolate buttercream frosting is creamy, sweet, and has a perfect color that is easy to work with! The best part about white chocolate frosting is that it goes very well with almost every flavour sweet. It also has a classic and great look and is easy to decorate and work with. Today’s recipe is an easy and simple one to make, yet a flavourful and delicious one.

Ingredients

This white chocolate frosting recipe yields approximately 12-14 cupcakes, depending on the amount of frosting on each one of them. Keep in mind that this recipe can also be used on other treats, such as cakes, and cookies.

For this recipe, you will need:

  • 250g unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • 150g powdered sugar
  • 40g white chocolate baking melts
  • 40ml whipping cream
  • 1tbsp vanilla extract

The vanilla extract in this recipe is optional, depending on whether you want a vanilla flavor or not. However, I recommend adding vanilla as it has a lovely aroma.

How to make white chocolate buttercream frosting

Before making this recipe, you need to make a white chocolate ganache. To do this, you will need to melt the white chocolate and whipping cream together. After melting, mix well with a spoon and let it cool before using.

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Using a handheld or stand mixer, beat butter until it is soft, smooth, and pale (this process usually takes up to 10 minutes).
  2. Sift in powdered sugar and mix until fully combined and free of lumps.
  3. Add vanilla extract and white chocolate ganache mixture.
  4. Beat for another 7-8 minutes, frequently cleaning down the sides of the bowl using a spatula.
  5. Once the mixture is fluffy and fully combined, your white chocolate buttercream is ready to go!

What can I use white chocolate frosting on?

You can use this frosting to add a beautiful touch of white chocolate sweetness, while still having the amazing texture of the buttercream. The white chocolate frosting has a big advantage, which is its color. The pure white color makes the perfect background for almost all decorations. White chocolate buttercream is also the perfect replacement for fondant on wedding cakes. With this swap, you can get rid of unhealthy fondant, but also add the delicious sweetness of white chocolate to the cake.

Use it on cupcakes

The first and one of the most common uses for this frosting is cupcakes. White chocolate buttercream looks best with chocolate cupcakes. However, it still goes perfectly with other flavors too. Once you have frosted your cupcakes, it’s a good idea to add some decorations for an even better appearance.

These are just some of the decorations that I personally use on top of white frostings:

  • Chocolate flakes
  • Rosebud petals
  • Soffee powder
  • Strawberry powder
  • Matcha powder
  • Berries
  • Biscuits/chocolates

These are just some of the decorations you can try on your white chocolate frosting. There is a lot of room to explore when it comes to decorating white chocolate frostings, which is what I personally love about it.

Use it on wedding cakes

As I mentioned before, white chocolate buttercream is the perfect replacement for fondant and even regular buttercream. Fondant might look clean, but it is FULL of sugar, making it the most unhealthy type of icing. Not only this, but the sweetness of fondant can also ruin the flavor of your cake and over-sweeten it.

When using white chocolate buttercream on a wedding cake, you can easily pair it with all different types of flowers, since most colors look great with white. Even white flowers look perfect on the white chocolate frosting!

White chocolate buttercream on any treat

Aside from cupcakes and wedding cakes, white chocolate frosting also works with most other treats: cookies, brownies, you name it!  Whether it’s a touch or a heap, this frosting can take the flavor of your sweets to the next level. My personal favorite treats to pair this frosting with, other than cakes and cupcakes, are brownies and cookies. The soft and chewy texture of cookies works perfectly with the smooth and creamy buttercream. Similarly, the color and flavor contrast between the frosting and a brownie works uniquely well.

Buttercream flavors

Buttercream is delicious enough as it is, but what if it could have different flavors (other than white chocolate obviously)? Well luckily, it can and it does! Aside from white chocolate which we have talked about today, there are many other buttercream flavors that you can easily make. Some common ones are vanilla, chocolate, lemon, and coffee. The best part is that when you have the buttercream base, you can almost add any flavor you like to it!

A personal favorite of mine is zesty buttercream, whether it is with lemon zest, orange zest, or grapefruit zest! You can even make peanut butter buttercream. Buttercream is great as there is a lot of potential to mix it with different flavors and pair it perfectly with your base, whether it be a cake, cupcake, or another treat.
